Half Moon was decommissioned in the summer of 1969 and towed to Curtis Bay, Md. She was stripped of everything useful and then auctioned off for scrap on 9 April 1970. Her hull was bought by Cantieri Navali, an Italian ship yard concern. They had the hull moved to a small shipyard off the Delaware River in southern New Jersey where it was cut up and taken away piecemeal.
