A "Buck and a Quarter" to most of us when referring to the Cuyahoga class of cutters. So called for their length was 125 feet. She was commissioned 1927 for patrol duty during Prohibition. Attached to the CG Training Center at Yorktown, Va., she was used to train officer candidates until her fatal collision with a coal freighter in 1978. She was the oldest operational commissioned ship in all the U. S. sea services. Eleven men embarked on the Cuyahoga were lost including a prior shipmate and friend on the Cutter Southwind, MKCS David Makin. In addition to CGC Taney, this was another vessel I had the honor and privilege of working on while stationed with CG Fifth District Naval Engineering Assist Team.
