The economy in 1960 was a lot like it is today..not very good. I had a hard time trying to find a decent job..so in October 1960 I decided to go back in the Navy. I was all set to go back, all I had to do was get sworn in. I had passed my physical and mental tests and the Navy was glad to have me back, I knew I was headed for a destroyer out of Norfolk Va.. I arrived early at the Naval Recruiting Office, Federal Bldg. Detroit Michigan. The Navy recruiters were all at lunch and the office was closed. The Coast Guard Recruiting office was across the hall and the Coast Guard recruiter invited me in to wait and have a cup of coffee..While waiting for the Navy Recruiters to return from lunch..The Coast Guard Recruiter told me all about the Coast Guard and I was impressed.. He also told me that if I went into the Coast Guard I would have my choice of duty, no boot camp, and because I still had all of my uniforms ( which were the same as the Navy) with the exception of the Treasury Dept shield. I would receive $200.00 clothing allowance and I wouldn't have to buy any uniforms. so for $200.00 I was sworn into the Coast Guard before the Navy Recruiter finished his lunch. and I never regretted it!!.
